A woman was killed and a teenage girl injured after unknown assailants attacked them with a tubewell handle in Chirla village of Joypurhat Sadar. The incident occurred late Tuesday night, according to Joypurhat Sadar Police Station OC Nazmul Quader.
Police and locals said 47-year-old Nurunnahar Begum and her 16-year-old niece, Khatija Khatun, were asleep in the same room when the attackers entered the house and struck them on the head. Both were taken to Joypurhat General Hospital in critical condition.
Nurunnahar died on the way to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital due to severe injuries. Khatija was admitted for advanced treatment.
Police say they are investigating to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the attack.
