The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Manikganj has sentenced a woman to one day of imprisonment for filing a false dowry case against her former husband. The verdict was delivered on Monday afternoon, December 22, by Judge Mamun Hasan Khan, court sources said.
The convicted woman, Sharmin Akhter, is a resident of Tebaria village in Saturia upazila and the former wife of Shahid Hossain of Manra village in Nagarpur upazila, Tangail. According to court records, the couple’s divorce was finalised on November 17, and Shahid Hossain paid Tk 14 lakh as part of the settlement, including child maintenance.
Despite the divorce and financial settlement, Sharmin filed a dowry harassment case on November 19, concealing the fact of the divorce, which led the court to issue a summons against Shahid. Both parties appeared before the court on Monday, where, after hearing arguments from both sides, the judge found the allegations to be false and acquitted the accused.
Following the acquittal, the court sentenced Sharmin Akhter to one day in jail for filing a false case. Shahid Hossain told reporters that the marriage ended due to marital discord and that the settlement was made with mutual consent avoiding further disputes. In her statement, Sharmin acknowledged receiving the settlement money but claimed she had earlier given Shahid Tk 12 lakh for employment purposes. Defence lawyer Azizul Haque confirmed that Sharmin was sent to jail following the court order.
