Police arrested a teacher in Shahbagh on Saturday on allegations of insulting BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman during his visit to the area. The arrested person was identified as AKM Shahidul Islam, vice-principal of Gabtoli Technical Training Center in the capital.
According to police, the incident occurred in the morning when Tarique Rahman was visiting the grave of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi in Shahbagh. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Moniruzzaman said Shahidul Islam allegedly shouted slogans referring to Tarique Rahman as an extortionist and terrorist. BNP leaders and activists present at the scene detained him and later handed him over to the police.
Police said Shahidul Islam was subsequently arrested under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code. He was produced before the court later in the day and sent to jail.
The arrest took place amid a large gathering of BNP leaders, activists, and supporters in Shahbagh during Tarique Rahman’s visit.
