A young man was critically injured after being tied to an electric pole and hacked with sharp weapons in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. Doctors said the victim’s two hands and one leg were almost severed in the attack. The incident took place on Wednesday in the Umarapur Ghat area.

The injured man, Abu Sufian (22), son of Rabiul Islam of Bajitpur village, was first admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and later transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka due to his critical condition.

According to Sufian’s family, the attack was carried out by local Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir activists after Sufian protested the harassment of a young female relative. Sufian told reporters that he was tied to a pole in front of a shop and attacked with sharp weapons despite pleading for his life. His mother said the attackers ignored his requests and continued hacking him.

Following the incident, Sufian’s father filed a case at Shibganj Police Station naming three individuals and 12–15 unidentified persons. Police later arrested two Jamaat-e-Islami activists—Shah Alam (22) and Abdur Razzak (23)—from the area and sent them to jail. The Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station said investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest others involved.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s local leadership denied organizational involvement in the attack.
