A study based on newspaper reports has found that children in Bangladesh are facing increasing risks due to rising incidents of rape, murder, and abuse. According to the Bangladesh Child Situation 2025 report, 62.66 percent of 1,867 negative child-related news reports involved rape and murder, indicating serious threats to children’s life and physical safety.
The report was launched on Sunday at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. It was prepared by the Man for Mankind Foundation (MJF) and presented at an event organized jointly by MJF, Street Children Activists Network (SCAN) Bangladesh, and human rights organization Sachetan Sangstha. The study analyzed national and local newspaper reports published between January and November this year.
Presenting the findings, SCAN Bangladesh General Secretary Moniruzzaman Mukul said that newspapers published 1,485 major reports related to children during the period. Of these, 31.19 percent were related to accidents and tragedies, including road accidents, drowning, falls, and sports-related deaths. Reports on child abuse and violence accounted for 15.63 percent, child trafficking and sexual abuse 8.75 percent, child health and protection 9.70 percent, and education-related risks 6.94 percent.
The report also showed that Dhaka division recorded the highest number of child-related crimes and accidents, with 298 children killed, 284 injured, and 2,376 identified as victims. Speakers at the event said that although the study was based on media reports and does not reflect the full national picture, the findings highlight an alarming situation. They stressed the need for stronger legal measures, faster justice, and long-term protection strategies for children, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.
