A 35-year-old woman, Adeline Biswas, has been arrested in Barishal, Bangladesh, for allegedly torturing and sexually abusing her ‘adopted’ 12-year-old daughter. The arrest was made on Monday night from her residence in the Police Lines Road Ambagaan area of the city.
According to police, Adeline had verbally ‘adopted’ the child from her parents when the child was very young and forced her to work as a domestic helper. The child was allegedly beaten daily for making mistakes and given leftover food. Adeline’s brother, Jony Biswas, is also accused of sexually assaulting the child.
The abuse was exposed when the child confided in another domestic helper, Jhumur Begum, who took the child away from the house on November 2. Adeline had filed a case against Jhumur Begum for child abduction, leading to her arrest on December 2. However, the child’s statement led to a court order for a case to be filed against Adeline and Jony Biswas.
Adeline Biswas has been sent to jail, and a three-day remand has been requested for interrogation. Efforts are underway to arrest Jony Biswas, who is still at large. The police investigation revealed the extent of the abuse, and authorities are working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
