Police have arrested five people in connection with the torture of a woman who was tied to an electric pole and had water poured on her in the Nordda market area of Dhaka. The arrests were made around 1:00 am early Saturday, police said.

The accused are Ekram Hossain (23), Naimur Rahman (24), Atik (18), Sharif (16), and Lokman (16). Police said the arrests followed the circulation of a video on social media showing the woman being tied to a pole and abused, which sparked widespread public outrage.

Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Hasan said the woman is a vagrant who survives by collecting garbage. According to police, she entered an open room of a madrasa in the Nordda area early in the morning, where some madrasa students detained her, tied her to an electric pole, and tortured her by pouring water on her.

The OC said police initiated action after the video spread online, identified those involved, and carried out arrests. Although no formal complaint has yet been filed, police said they acted proactively and that legal proceedings are underway. The arrested individuals are currently being interrogated as the investigation continues.
