The Livable Bangladesh Alliance organized a protest rally and march titled “We Want a Livable Dhaka” on December 23, 2025, in Dhanmondi 5/A, Dhaka. The program was held beside the road near Medinova and the adjacent lake, marking the first public action of the We Want a Livable Bangladesh movement, with the stated goal of expanding the campaign nationwide.
Organizers stated that the movement is based on the belief that a city is livable only when marginalized communities can live safely, non-human life and nature are treated as integral to urban life, and governance systems are democratic and accountable. They described the campaign as an ecological and urban-political call rather than a symbolic demand.
The Livable Bangladesh Alliance was introduced as a platform bringing together individuals and socio-political organizations to organize a broader social and political movement. The alliance frames Bangladesh as an interconnected ecological, social, and political system, emphasizing links between people, nature, and governance structures.
Speakers at the gathering said that although Dhaka is demographically diverse, it faces severe ecological constraints. They cited the loss of rivers, wetlands, green spaces, community areas, and walkable infrastructure, and stated that development and security-driven policies have led to evictions, environmental degradation, and increased vulnerability for working-class and marginalized communities.
The program concluded with a rally from Dhanmondi 5/A to Abahani Field. Organizers stated that the movement opposes authoritarian and exclusionary development models and calls for participatory, accountable, and pluralistic governance. The alliance confirmed that the demands of the We Want a Livable Dhaka campaign have been formally documented.
