Md. Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Barguna district unit, has been removed from his party position and had his membership (Rukon) suspended following controversial remarks about Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). The action was announced Tuesday morning in a notification signed by district Ameer Maulana Mohibullah Harun.

Shamim Ahsan made the remarks on January 25 during a public meeting in Patharghata Upazila while speaking at an election rally. In his speech, he said DUCSU had once been “a brothel and a drug den.” After the statement circulated publicly, it drew strong reactions from current and former Dhaka University students and from broader political and educational circles.

The party notification stated that his comments about Dhaka University severely damaged the party’s image and contradicted Jamaat-e-Islami’s policies and ideals. According to the statement, the disciplinary action was taken in line with central directives and a decision of the district working committee.

District Ameer Mohibullah Harun confirmed the decision, saying the organization does not take responsibility for statements made outside its policies and that action was taken to maintain organizational discipline.

The incident has prompted wider discussion within political and academic spaces regarding campaign rhetoric and the boundaries of acceptable public speech during the election period.
