Man Arrested in Nilphamari Over Extortion and Sexual Harassment After Viral Video

DB police in Nilphamari arrested Md. Mamun Sheikh (25), also known as Jangi Mamun, on January 30 in connection with an alleged extortion and sexual harassment incident that circulated on social media. Police identified him as an active member and alleged leader of a group targeting couples in public spaces.

The incident occurred on January 25 in the Boromath area of Nilphamari town. According to the complaint, a young man and his wife were surrounded and illegally detained by the group, who demanded 5,000 taka. When they refused, the man was assaulted, and the attack was filmed. The complaint further states that when the woman intervened, she was pushed and touched inappropriately. The group allegedly threatened to spread the video online and later uploaded it to social media.

Police said the viral footage caused concern among residents. Acting on orders from the Superintendent of Police, the District Detective Branch conducted an investigation using information technology and carried out an operation in the Charaikhola Battali Market area, where Mamun was arrested.

A case has been filed at Nilphamari Sadar Police Station (Case No. 42, dated 30/01/2026) under sections 341/385/386/323/506/34 of the Penal Code, Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and Section 25(1) of the Cyber Security Ordinance. Police said efforts to arrest other accused are ongoing.
