Female students at University of Dhaka observed World Hijab Day through a procession and human chain organized by the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) on Sunday afternoon. The procession began at the Vice-Chancellor’s premises and concluded at the base of the Raju Sculpture at TSC, where participants gathered to form a human chain.
DUCSU Executive Member Sabikunnahar Tamanna said the program centered on women’s right to choose the hijab. Speaking at the Raju Sculpture, she stated that the hijab is a matter of personal right and autonomy, adding that women should be able to move freely and independently while maintaining their chosen form of dress.
Addressing concerns of discrimination, Tamanna said the hijab is often portrayed as an obstacle to women’s advancement. She referred to reported instances where the hijab and niqab have been made contentious in recruitment processes and admission examinations, framing the issue as one of equal access and non-discrimination for women.
DUCSU Cafeteria and Common Room Affairs Secretary Umme Salma noted that World Hijab Day is observed in around 140 countries and has been marked in Bangladesh in previous years. As part of the event, organizers distributed 1,200 hijabs among female students on campus.
