A Dhaka court has sent lawyer Shamsul Islam to jail after a businesswoman filed a rape case against him. He was arrested early Friday in Bijoy Nagar and produced before the court. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman ordered his detention as the investigation continues.
According to the complaint, the woman, a garment business owner, went to the lawyer’s chamber on the 16th floor of Mahtab Center in Bijoy Nagar around 9 PM on Thursday to inquire about her case date. She alleged that Shamsul Islam raped her around 9:30 PM and threatened her to keep the matter secret. The case was filed later that night, and police arrested him around 2:30 AM.
Police said the accused had previously handled the woman’s legal case and secured her bail in a business-related matter on December 24, 2025. The woman stated they lived in the same Wari neighborhood and she knew him as a local acquaintance. She alleged he had delayed sharing court dates before calling her to the chamber that evening.
The investigating officer of Paltan Police Station sought his detention in court. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
The accused’s lawyer claimed the case was fabricated and questioned the timeline of the complaint and arrest.
