A group identifying itself as Sachetan Nagorik Samaj has sent a letter to the Prime Minister calling for the cancellation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration, alleging that the party’s position on women’s leadership violates constitutional provisions. The development was disclosed at a press conference by entrepreneur and influencer Robayat Fatima Tani, who read the letter publicly.

According to the organizers, the group is led by convener Nila Israfil, with Tani serving as member secretary. The letter cites statements attributed to Jamaat Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and other senior leaders asserting that women should not serve as party chief, head of state, president, chief justice, or head of major institutions.

The organization argues that such positions conflict with Articles 27 and 28 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. It also maintains that under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), a political party taking positions contrary to gender equality could face cancellation of registration.

In addition to seeking deregistration, the group called for legal action over what it described as derogatory remarks about women and urged authorities to adopt a strict stance on statements that restrict women’s participation in governance. Jamaat-e-Islami had not issued an official response at the time of publication.

The issue has added to ongoing debates over constitutional rights, political participation, and the role of religious parties in Bangladesh’s political system.
