A man seen assaulting two women with a stick near Raju Bhaskarzya at Dhaka University’s TSC area early Wednesday has been identified as an accused in a 2024 murder case, raising serious concerns about campus safety and law enforcement failures. The incident occurred after the women reportedly went to the area following sehri, according to statements in the viral video.

Police confirmed the attacker as Md. Rakib, a student of the Department of World Religions and Culture at Dhaka University. Kaliakair Police Station officials said he is named in a murder case filed in Gazipur’s Kaliakair over the killing of a young man in September 2024, for which a chargesheet has already been submitted. Rakib’s twin brother, Md. Shakib, is also accused in the same case, and both have reportedly been absconding.

The video circulating on social media shows Rakib striking one of the women with a stick while verbally harassing them. The Dhaka University administration has formed a three-member investigation committee to examine the incident. Meanwhile, the victim reported that the harassment occurred without provocation while they were present in the area late at night.

Details of the murder case indicate that the victim, Sabbir, was found dead below a building after being lured to the rooftop, where bloodstains and weapons were later discovered. Despite the submission of a chargesheet months ago, family members allege that no meaningful steps were taken to arrest the accused. Police stated that responsibility for arrest now lies with the Detective Branch.

The incident has intensified scrutiny over how individuals facing serious criminal charges were able to remain active on campus and allegedly commit further violence. Authorities say operations to arrest the accused will now be conducted.
