A tribunal in Sunamganj has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a college student under the pretext of marriage and recording the assault. The verdict was delivered Sunday by Judge Muhammad Habibullah of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

The convicted individual, Mohibur Rahman of Doarabazar Upazila, is currently absconding. In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of one lakh taka, to be paid to the survivor as compensation.

According to case details, the man first contacted the student in September 2019, falsely claiming to be an expatriate living in France with substantial property. Over time, he established a romantic relationship and promised marriage and relocation abroad. He later told her he had returned to Bangladesh and arranged a meeting.

On November 11, he allegedly took the student to a residential hotel in Chhatak Municipality with the help of an associate, where she was raped multiple times and secretly filmed. After she returned home and cut off contact, the perpetrator reportedly circulated the videos and photographs on social media.

The survivor subsequently filed a case at Chhatak Police Station under the Pornography Act. Authorities confirmed that the convicted man remains at large.
