A 22-year-old housewife has been hospitalized in Jhenaidah after allegedly being tortured by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. A case was filed on Friday with Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station by the woman’s father. The survivor, Chandina Khatun, has been admitted to the 250-bed General Hospital in Jhenaidah for treatment.
According to the case statement, Chandina was assaulted by her husband, Amirul Chowdhury, along with her father-in-law and mother-in-law on Wednesday night at their home in Bhupatipur village of Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. Her hair was cut and she was locked in a room after her family refused further dowry payments. Neighbours later informed her family, and she was rescued the following day and taken to the hospital.
Chandina’s father, Majedul Mandal, said the family had previously paid 380,000 taka before Amirul left for overseas work in Malaysia. After returning home about a month ago, he allegedly demanded an additional 180,000 taka. When the family refused, the abuse began.
Police confirmed that a case has been filed regarding the incident. Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Zahirul Islam said authorities are proceeding with legal action in connection with the alleged dowry-related violence.
