The National Citizen Party (NCP) has launched its women’s wing, National Women’s Power, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The announcement was made on Sunday afternoon at a program held at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital.
NCP convener Nahid Islam announced a three-member committee for the new organization. Monira Sharmin has been appointed convener, Mahmuda Alam Mitu member secretary, and Nusrat Tabassum the chief organizer. All three leaders currently hold positions in the NCP central committee and were active participants in the July mass uprising.
Monira Sharmin previously served as the General Secretary of Dhaka University’s Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall Sangsad in 2019. Mahmuda Alam Mitu is a medical doctor by profession, while Nusrat Tabassum was among the frontline coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement at Dhaka University.
Speaking at the event, Nahid Islam said the organization will soon form a full committee and work to develop its manifesto, goals, and constitution. He said National Women’s Power aims to organize women across the country and take a strong position against issues such as violence against women and cyber harassment.
The event also included a discussion marking International Women’s Day titled “Remedies for the Increasing Violence Against Women and the Trial of Rape.” Speakers included former interim government adviser Farida Akhtar, journalist Zaima Islam, DUCSU leader Fatima Tasnim Juma, North South University student activist Nafsin Mehnaz Azirin, and Sabikun Nahar Munni of Jamaat’s central women’s department.
