Police have arrested the husband of a Jahangirnagar University student after her bloodied body was discovered in a rented residence near the university campus in Savar. The accused, Fahim Al Hasan, was produced before court on Monday morning, where police sought a five-day remand for further interrogation in connection with the case.

The deceased, Sharmin Jahan (Khadija), was a fourth-year student in the Department of Public Administration at Jahangirnagar University and the daughter of Shahjahan Molla from Tetoiya village in Kachua Upazila of Chandpur. Her husband, Fahim Al Hasan—also a fourth-year student in the Department of Economics at Dhaka College—is the son of Md. Hanif Sarkar from Muradnagar Upazila in Comilla.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) and police officials, Sharmin and Fahim married on June 24 last year following a romantic relationship and later informed their families. In September, the couple rented a house in the Islamnagar area near the university and began living there. The FIR states that Sharmin had reportedly informed family members about disputes that emerged in the marriage.

Investigators said that on March 15 at around 4:45 PM, Fahim called Sharmin’s uncle, Monirul Islam, claiming that she had suddenly fallen critically ill and asking him to come to the residence. When he arrived, he found Sharmin lying in a pool of blood on the bed. With assistance from neighbors, she was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared her dead. The inquest report documented deep injuries on the right side of her forehead and the crown of her head.

Following the killing, the university administration and several student organizations expressed concern and called for accountability. In a statement issued late Sunday night, Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan described the incident as a brutal killing and demanded a prompt and impartial investigation. Leaders from the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCU) and other student groups have also demanded justice and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
