A student leader in Brahmanbaria has been removed from his position in Chhatra Dal following rumors circulated on social media labeling him as “transgender,” raising concerns about harassment, misinformation, and gender-based stigma.

Redwan Islam, Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Sayedabad Government Adarsha College unit of Chhatra Dal in Kasba Upazila, was relieved of his duties shortly after his appointment. The district committee issued a notice citing allegations of concealing personal information and acting against organizational rules.

The decision followed widespread discussion on Facebook, where claims about Redwan’s gender identity were circulated. However, the Chhatra Dal constitution does not include any provision barring transgender individuals from membership, stating only that members must be Bangladeshi students.

In a public statement, Redwan Islam denied the claims, stating that he is not transgender and describing the situation as a coordinated smear campaign. He reported experiencing online harassment, threats, and social humiliation, adding that the impact has extended to his family and mental well-being.

Party representatives said the decision was influenced by public criticism on social media and indicated that reinstatement could be considered if proof regarding his gender identity is provided.
