A woman attempted suicide inside a courtroom in Feni after consuming poison during the hearing of a dowry case filed against her husband. The incident took place on May 10 in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Minhaj Uddin during proceedings related to the husband’s bail application.
According to court sources, the woman had filed the dowry case on January 29, alleging abuse and financial demands by her husband. During the hearing, the husband sought an extension of his bail, which was opposed by the woman and her lawyer. The court later rejected the bail plea and ordered the husband to be sent to jail.
Eyewitnesses stated that immediately following the order, the woman took a bottle containing poison from her bag and consumed it inside the courtroom. Lawyers and members of the court police present at the scene rescued her and rushed her to Feni General Hospital, where doctors later stated that she was out of danger and under observation.
Relatives alleged that the woman had long been subjected to mental and physical abuse and that her husband had refused to live with her while also withholding dower payments and pressuring her for dowry. Family members stated that prolonged disputes and threats had left her in severe distress.
Court police officials confirmed that the court later ordered her arrest in connection with the incident of consuming poison inside the courtroom. Authorities stated that further legal proceedings are ongoing.
