Md Moshin, 52, known as Moushumi Hijra, a longtime leader of Chattogram’s Hijra community, was found dead at their home in the city’s Khulshi-Ambagan area on September 5. Police said Moushumi had long served as a “Guru Ma” to a section of the local Hijra community.
According to Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdur Rahim, neighbouring members of the Hijra community went to Moushumi’s home on Saturday morning and knocked on the door but received no response. They subsequently entered the house and found Moushumi lying dead on the bed.
Police reported injury marks around Moushumi’s neck, while their tongue was partially protruding and blood was visible around the mouth. Rahim said the initial investigation indicated that Moushumi may have been strangled. Police have not yet announced a confirmed cause of death or identified any suspect in connection with the incident.
Police collected evidence from the home and sent Moushumi’s body to the morgue at Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Investigators have also begun collecting CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of the investigation.
Members of the Hijra community gathered outside Moushumi’s home following the discovery and demanded a fair investigation. Moushumi’s death comes amid persistent marginalisation and violence faced by Hijra and gender-diverse communities in Bangladesh, making a transparent investigation that centres the community’s concerns particularly critical.
