We are honored to present Episode 25 of the Bangladesh Feminist Oral History Project, an initiative of the Bangladesh Feminist Archives dedicated to documenting the voices, struggles, and legacies of Bangladeshi feminists across generations.

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Tazreena Sajjad, a scholar and educator whose work examines forced displacement, migration, transitional justice, gender, and human rights.

Dr. Sajjad is an Assistant Professor at American University’s School of International Service in Washington, D.C. She is the author of Transitional Justice in South Asia: A Study of Afghanistan and Nepal. Her research explores the politics of refugee governance, racialized borders, humanitarian protection, and global inequalities, with particular attention to Rohingya displacement in Bangladesh.

Through her scholarship, she challenges dominant understandings of security, migration, and justice, examining how state policies, colonial histories, and international institutions shape the experiences of displaced communities.

Topics Discussed:

  • Early life, education, and political formation
  • Transitional justice in Afghanistan and Nepal
  • Forced displacement and refugee politics
  • Rohingya refugees and Bangladesh’s humanitarian response
  • Bhasan Char and refugee containment
  • Gender, conflict, and displacement
  • Race, borders, and hierarchies of compassion
  • Migration, nationalism, and global justice
  • Teaching, scholarship, and feminist futures
