A court in Faridpur has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife in a case linked to dowry-related violence. The verdict was delivered on Thursday by the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in the presence of the accused.
The convict, Naser Thakur (30), was found guilty of killing his wife, Swapna Begum (25), in Madhukhali Upazila. According to the prosecution, the couple had experienced ongoing conflict following their marriage due to repeated dowry demands. Swapna was subjected to physical abuse when the demands were not met.
Case records state that on March 21, 2016, Naser assaulted his wife during a dispute and strangled her to death inside their home using an orna (scarf). Following the incident, Swapna’s brother filed a murder case at Madhukhali Police Station, and police later submitted a charge sheet after completing the investigation.
After reviewing evidence and witness testimonies, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In addition to the sentence, the court imposed a fine of 50,000 taka, with an additional one-year term of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.
The verdict was announced by Judge Shamima Parveen of the Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. Police escorted the convicted individual to prison following the pronouncement of the judgment.
