Allegations have surfaced in Chandpur’s Shahrashti Upazila that a man had been living within the Hijra community for years under a different identity, with claims that he collected money while presenting himself as a Hijra. The individual, identified as Delwar Hossain, reportedly left the area after being confronted.
According to local sources, Delwar—originally from Nangalkot in Comilla—had been using the name “Sumi” while living among members of the Hijra community. He is reported to have spent several years in different areas, including Comilla and Chandpur, where he was known within Hijra networks and engaged in income-generating activities.
The situation came to public attention on April 1 when a woman identifying herself as his wife, Nasima Begum, arrived in Shahrashti with their children and claimed that “Sumi” was in fact her husband. She stated that he had not been supporting the family and that she had come in search of him. Following her arrival, Delwar reportedly left the residence where members of the community had been staying.
Community members said they had known him under his chosen name and identity and were not aware of the claims prior to the incident. A local Hijra leader stated that he had been living within the community for several years.
The incident has drawn attention locally, with residents calling for investigation into the allegations. No official statement from law enforcement regarding a formal case has been reported so far.
