A man was seen repeatedly punching, kicking, and dragging women by their hair in Lakshmipur, in a video that circulated widely on social media on April 11. The accused, Aftab Uddin Bhuiyan, was arrested later that day.

According to police and local sources, the incident is linked to a land dispute between Aftab Uddin and Ismail Hossain in Sahapur village under Lakshmipur municipality. On April 9, Aftab, along with several associates, allegedly attacked Ismail’s residence, during which female members of the household were physically assaulted. Several individuals were injured and later received treatment at Sadar Hospital.

Aftab Uddin, a resident of Sahapur village and son of the late Siddiq Ullah, is a former leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir at the ward level. He had recently announced his intention to contest the Lakshmipur Municipality mayoral election and had put up campaign posters identifying himself as a candidate.

Following the circulation of the video showing the assault, police initiated an investigation and arrested Aftab on Saturday afternoon. He was later sent to judicial custody by court order.

Police confirmed that a case has been filed by Ismail Hossain on charges related to violence against women and molestation. In addition to Aftab, six other individuals have been named as accused, and operations are ongoing to arrest them.

Local political representatives stated that although Aftab had previous affiliations with Islami Chhatra Shibir, he is not currently active in party politics.
