A woman was tied to a tree and beaten by her husband in Kurigram’s Roumari Upazila after being accused of stealing bitter gourds, in an incident that was recorded and widely circulated on social media.

The incident took place on April 15 in a village under Datbhanga Union. According to local residents, the woman was allegedly caught collecting bitter gourds from the land of Farhad Hossain. A sack containing the vegetables was reportedly found in her possession. Witnesses said that after the incident was reported to her family, her husband, Badia Mia, arrived at the scene around 9:00 AM. He then tied her to a tree with a rope and beat her repeatedly with a stick in the presence of others.

Video footage shows the woman bound to a tree while being assaulted, as bystanders watched and recorded the incident. No one intervened to stop the violence. An individual present at the scene is heard encouraging the act, calling for “proper justice.” The landowner stated that theft had been occurring repeatedly and that he had informed the woman’s husband after detaining her. A local Union Parishad member described the incident as an attempt by the husband to “discipline” his wife but acknowledged that the physical assault was inappropriate.

Police said they have reviewed the video and confirmed that the act of tying and beating the woman is illegal. Authorities stated that legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is filed.
