In Cox’s Bazar, a 29-year-old woman, Shahida Akter Munni, was killed after her husband allegedly fed her sedatives mixed in rasmalai and later dismembered her body in an attempt to conceal her identity. The accused, Saiful Islam (33), was arrested from Dhaka and brought to Cox’s Bazar for interrogation, where police say he confessed to the killing.
According to police, the incident took place on the night of March 26. After Shahida consumed the drugged sweets and became unconscious, she was killed by having her throat slit with a sharp weapon. Her head and both hands were then severed. The following day, Saiful disposed of the torso in a pond in the Jhilongja area on the outskirts of Cox’s Bazar city and discarded the severed head and hands in the Bakkhali River from Khurushkul Bridge, approximately seven kilometers away.
On April 11, police recovered the headless and handless body from a pond in the Janarghona area. The body was initially unidentified, but Shahida was later identified by relatives based on her clothing. Using a mobile number obtained from the family, law enforcement tracked Saiful’s location and arrested him in Dhaka before transferring him to Cox’s Bazar for further investigation.
Police reported that the accused admitted to the sequence of events during questioning. The knife used in the killing and remnants of the sedative-laced sweets have been recovered. Search operations are ongoing to locate the severed head in the Bakkhali River.
A case has been filed at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station under the Prevention of Oppression against Women and Children Act. Police confirmed that further legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
