On July 29, 2023, women footballers from Khulna’s Tentultola Super Queen Football Academy were assaulted during training, with attackers confronting them over girls playing football. At least four players were injured, including Mangoli Bagchi, who was hospitalized. The assault took place in a public setting, where the players were surrounded and targeted in a coordinated act of gender-based violence.
The incident sparked national attention, leading to arrests and a wave of official visits and assurances. Authorities and private actors promised security, financial support, accommodation, and a dedicated field, including plans for a mini stadium. The practice ground was temporarily repaired, and organizations expressed solidarity with the players in the immediate aftermath.
These commitments were not sustained. Within months, institutional follow-up declined, and by November 2023, the academy had stopped operations. Training ended, and players were evicted from their residence, forcing them to return home across multiple districts. Without access to coaching or infrastructure, their ability to continue in football was effectively halted.
Several players, including members of under-17 and under-19 divisional teams, have since left the sport. At least four have been married off, while others have entered informal labor due to financial constraints. Previously, 8 to 10 players from the academy regularly represented district and divisional teams, but around 18 to 20 players are now out of training during an active playing period.
The case filed after the attack remains under trial. Players reported inconsistencies in complaint recording and limited police cooperation at the initial stage. Although arrests were made, the accused later secured bail, and the next hearing was scheduled for June 25, 2024. There hasn’t been any update so far.
